There Is a Time for Everything

Reflections on work, family, and making room ~ Ecclesiastes 3:1

Maggie Chen in Swiss.jpeg

Lately, I've been thinking about this verse.

For so many years, my focus was on building my studio.

God gave me a love to teach and the privilege of building a home studio filled with wonderful students and families. Over the years, the studio has grown almost entirely through referrals. Parents have trusted me with their children. Many families have stayed for years. Together, we’ve celebrated recitals, competitions, auditions, and countless small victories that only a teacher and a family truly understand.

But recently, the things that keep me awake at night aren't my students or business anymore.

It's my parents getting older far away from me…

It’s knowing my children won’t be home forever.

It’s watching Roger carry the weight of a busy season at work.

And sometimes it's the guilt of wondering if I've given enough time to the people who matter most…

Maybe excellence in this season looks different…

“Sometimes excellence looks like choosing to do a little less, but doing the most important things with greater peace and intention.”

Perhaps this is simply what a new season of life looks like…
A life with a little more margin.

More room
for conversations that can't be scheduled.

More room
for dinners around the table.

More room
for one more trip to see my parents in Taiwan.

More room
to simply be present with the people God has entrusted to me.

I don't think I'll ever regret spending more time with the people I love.

I hope that when I look back ten years from now, my memories won’t be of perfectly organized lesson schedules or flawlessly run recitals. I hope they’ll be having coffee with Roger overlooking the Matterhorn, more trips and FaceTiming my parents in Taiwan, hearing Gabby tell me about college, watching Isaac build his career, and knowing I invested deeply in the people God entrusted to me…

I'm thankful for everything the Lord has laid before us.
